In a startling development that underscores the challenges of document forgery in public institutions, Hon. Jesse Okey-Joe Onuakalusi, the member representing Oshodi/Isolo II Federal Constituency in Lagos, has formally petitioned the police after uncovering an alleged case of impersonation by his former aide, Ajayi Samuel Crowther.
According to a petition submitted through legal representatives, Okpoko SAN and Associates, the lawmaker has accused Crowther of forging his signature and unlawfully using his official letterhead. The petition was addressed to the Divisional Police Officer at the National Assembly Complex, seeking a thorough investigation into the matter.
The fraudulent act was uncovered in April 2024 when Hon. Onuakalusi received an inquiry from the Embassy of the Republic of Taiwan. The embassy sought to verify a letter purportedly signed by the legislator, nominating Crowther for a training program in Taiwan. “I was shocked to receive such correspondence,” Onuakalusi said, noting that he neither authored nor signed any such document.
In the petition, Onuakalusi condemned the forgery as a grave criminal offense, one that not only misrepresented his office but also potentially damaged diplomatic relations. “For someone to have the gall to forge the letterhead and signature of a legislator is the height of criminality. It is a blatant abuse of power and impunity,” he stated, expressing deep concern about the implications of such misconduct.
Hon. Onuakalusi urged the police to conduct a detailed investigation, not just into the Taiwan incident but also into whether Crowther might have used similar tactics with other agencies—either within Nigeria or abroad. He emphasized the need for swift action to protect public office holders from fraud and to reinforce the integrity of official processes.
The lawmaker’s petition marks a critical step in addressing impersonation and document forgery—crimes that have grown increasingly prevalent in political and bureaucratic settings. As the case unfolds, it serves as a stark reminder of the importance of vigilance and accountability in public service.
